1. What comes in the box?

In some regions, HUE Animation Studio also includes modelling clay or an animation activity book. Please check the product listing before you buy.

2. Does the camera have manual focus?

Yes. Turn the silver focusing ring around the camera's lens until the picture appears sharp.

3. What are HUE Animation Studio's full specifications and capabilities?

For full details please see the Features page.

4. Do I need a separate microphone to make videos with HUE Animation Studio?

HUE Animation Studio's camera comes with a built-in USB microphone.

5. Does the HUE camera support regular video conferencing or picture editing software?

The HUE camera works with a wide range of video conferencing and picture editing software. Any software that is designed to work with a USB camera should work using HUE as its video input source.

6. Can I video chat with Hue?

Yes! As well as being part of HUE Animation Studio, the HUE camera can be used separately for video chat, visualisation or simply recording real time videos. Hue works with popular third party video chat software such as Skype™ (Windows/Mac), AIM® (Windows only), FaceTime (Mac only) and Yahoo!® Messenger (Windows/Mac). Pick which video chat network you wish to join, download the software from their website and follow their setup instructions. Make sure you set the USB camera as your camera and microphone in the new program's settings, then you're ready to chat!

You can even send your exported animation projects to your video chat contacts.

7. Can I use the HUE camera with Skype or Google Hangouts?

Yes! Hue is compatible out of the box with Google Hangouts and Skype for Windows and Mac OS X. As soon as you connect HUE to the computer, it is ready to start free video chats worldwide on the Skype network.

8. Can I use the HUE camera with other animation software?

Yes! Any software that is designed to work with a USB camera should work using HUE as its video input source. We hope though that you'll quickly find that the HUE Animation Studio is even better than other video packages.

9. Can I take still pictures with the HUE camera?

HUE supports taking still pictures. On Window PCs, the button on the back of the camera will launch the Snapshot function if the camera is in use. HUE cannot take pictures when not plugged into a computer and does not have internal storage memory to save images.

Mac users will find that HUE is fully compatible with Photo Booth. Alternatively, to take a picture of the camera video window at any time, press Command+Shift+4 together, then the Space Bar - a camera icon will appear over your mouse pointer ready for you to click the window you want to snapshot. You can learn more about Apple's built-in screenshot features at this link.

10. Can I use the HUE camera as a document camera or visualiser as well?

We have had feedback from many educators who are using HUE as a document camera in their classrooms with great success. Because the camera is plug and play and so compact, it is perfect for use alongside smartboards and interactive whiteboards to show documents, science experiences or artwork to the class. The extra software which comes with HUE will display a live video image on your screen which you can then project through the computer as normal. You can keep on using HUE even when you're not working on an animation project!

11. I can't activate my animation software.

Please see our activation FAQ section for solutions to common activation problems.

12. I can't install my animation software.

Please see our installation guides for Windows and Mac OS X.

13. I can't find my HUE Animation Studio serial key.

Your serial key or HUE code for the stop motion animation software will be on a separate activation leaflet inside the box or attached the CD sleeve in your HUE Animation pack. If your version of HUE Animation Studio came with The Hue Book of Animation, check the back cover for your HUE code. If you purchased a standalone copy of the software without the camera, it will be on a sticker inside the box. We are unable to send reminders of your unique serial code, so please keep it safe and contact your vendor if you need help locating it.

14. I can't find my HUE Animation Studio software CD.

Please download the missing software following these instructions. If you've forgotten your original registration details, your can use your registered email address with this form to reset your password. If you need help gaining access to your account, please contact our team.

15. Can I use the software even if my computer has no CD/DVD drive?

Please register as normal and click the link on the confirmation page to download the software. Once you've registered for the first time you can access the software download through your online account whenever you need to reinstall.

16. I have a question about the Windows version of HUE Animation.

Please see our Windows FAQ section for help.

17. I have a question about the Mac version of HUE Animation.

Please see our Mac OS X FAQ section for help.

18. Will the Mac version of HUE Animation Studio work on a Windows PC?

The camera will work as a plug and play device, however the animation software will only work with the matching operating system. If your version of HUE Animation Studio says "for Windows and Mac OS X" on the box or came with a HUE code, it will work on either platform.

19. I want to use HUE Animation Studio in Linux.

There are no plans for a Linux version of the animation software at this time, however if you would find such a version useful please contact us and let us know.

The HUE camera will work in Linux in other applications so long as UVC support has been installed. This comes as standard in the current version of Ubuntu and many other popular distributions. For more information about the Linux UVC driver project please visit the official website.

20. I want to use HUE Animation Studio on an iPad, iPhone, Android tablet or another portable device.

Please check that your device supports USB cameras and that you can install either a Windows or Mac OS X application on it. At this time, Apple does not support connecting USB cameras to the iPad, iPod or iPhone, so neither the camera nor the software is compatible. If you want to install animation software on your iOS devices separately, a similar app called MyCreate is available on the App Store.

21. I want to install the software on more than one computer but I only need one camera.

The software in the HUE Animation Studio package is a single user license, so to install on multiple computers you would need to purchase additional licenses through the HUE Shop. If you are moving from one computer to another, you can delete the software from the first one and then reinstall on the second without having to purchase another license. Please contact us if you see the message that the software has detected too many activations for your license key.

22. Is it possible to purchase the camera separately?

Yes, please visit HueHD.com if you are interested in the camera on its own. You can also add the individual cameras to your order in our online shop.

23. Is it possible to purchase The HUE Book of Animation separately?

The HUE Book of Animation can be purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store. Please contact us if you wish to purchase a physical copy.

24. Where can I find the cut-out activities from The HUE Book of Animation?

If you purchased the book through the Kindle Store, you can download the cut-outs and sound effects at this link. If your copy of The HUE Book of Animation came with a HUE Animation Studio kit, all of the downloadable files will be included on the CD.

25. Where can I watch the videos from The HUE Book of Animation?

All of the sample videos are available on our YouTube and Vimeo channels. If your copy of The HUE Book of Animation came with a HUE Animation Studio kit, all of the videos will be included on the CD.

26. I am ordering on behalf of a school and need to use a purchase order.

Schools can use our education order form if a quotation or invoice is required.

27. What is onion skinning?

Onion skinning is a feature of HUE Animation Studio which lets you see a 'ghostly' image of your previous captured frame over your live video stream from the camera. This is extremely helpful for lining up your models accurately, and for avoiding problems if your set is knocked or a prop falls over. You can always see exactly where your models were standing previously at any time.

The ghostly images won't show up in your finished video; all you will be left with is smooth, error-free stop motion animation.

If you do not want to use the onion skinning feature, it can be turned off. It is also possible to set the transparency effect higher or lower to suit your individual movie.

28. Is HUE Animation Studio only for animating modelling clay?

You can animate anything you can see using stop motion techniques; drawings, toys, household objects and even real people. We recommend modelling clay as it can be shaped into anything you can imagine, but if you want to try something more ambitious there are no limitations!

One fantastic use for stop motion animation is to create a time lapse video, taking pictures of a slow moving scene or object over a long period of time to show how it changes. You can even make a stop motion animation project showing how you age every day or demonstrating how a plant grows.

If you've animated something unusual, why not submit it to our video gallery on YouTube to show other people?

29. I want to add my video to the HUE Animation Studio YouTube channel.

Please send us a message through this website or YouTube with a link to your video.

30. I want to know more about the modelling clay which comes with HUE Animation Studio.

In some regions, the HUE Animation Studio kit contains modelling clay. Our modelling clay is either made in the UK by Newclay Products Ltd or in Spain by Jovi.

Newplast is non-toxic, complies with the EN71 Toy Safety Standard, and is safe for children from the age of three to use as a modelling material. Children under three should be supervised by an adult. Protect work surfaces, clothes, carpets, etc. Wash hands thoroughly after use with soap and warm water or a proprietary cleansing product. Clothing can be washed/cleaned normally. Avoid ingestion and eye contact. The material is safe to be handled but gloves should be worn if a skin reaction or irritation occurs. Store in the original container if possible or in an air-tight container. Store between 15°C and 30°C. In the unlikely event of inhalation, rinse nose and mouth with water as required and seek medical attention if there is any discomfort. Small quantities swallowed should not cause a problem. If larger quantities are swallowed, drink a small amount of liquid paraffin (if available) and plenty of water. Seek medical attention if there is any discomfort. Material in an eye should be treated by washing the eye with plenty of water while lifting the eye lids. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if any discomfort continues.

31. What else can I do with HUE Animation Studio?

The software includes a time-lapse photography mode as well as chroma key (green screen) functionality. There's a series of tutorials on our blog which introduce these features. We have heard from fans using Hue with great success as a visualiser, document camera, vlog camera and even for lunar photography. Let us know how you use yours!

32. What's the difference between SAM Animation and the HUE Animation software?

Our HUE Animation software is based on SAM Animation, a cross-platform animation suite designed with educators and families in mind. There is no difference between SAM Animation and HUE Animation other than the name and logo. Please contact us if you have any questions about either product and we'll be happy to help.

33. What's the difference between HUE Animation and Moshi Movies?

Moshi Movies is a special edition of HUE Animation Studio featuring the Moshi Monsters characters. The camera and software in the Moshi Movies pack are the same as in HUE Animation Studio, but there is a special guidebook and reversible animation backdrop included to help Moshi Monsters fans recreate their favourite scenes from the game. Moshi Monsters is a trademark of Mind Candy Ltd.

34. Which version of the software should I install?

Please use the latest version of the software from your online account, to ensure that you have all of the newest updates and fixes included. The current version of HUE Animation is 1.5.9. If you're not sure which version you have installed, please open the software and check the 'About HUE Animation' option in the menu.

35. Why does my HUE Animation kit look different to the one on your website?

From time to time we may change the design of our packaging, and depending on where you purchased your kit there may be some cosmetic differences between versions. Please contact us if you have any questions about our products and we'll be happy to help.

36. What is iCreate To Educate?

You may sometimes see the brand name iCreate To Educate during registration and when logging into your online account. iCreate To Educate is the name of our US office and we are currently in the process of linking our websites.
